What happens when your self-exclusion period ends in Kenya
When the period you selected runs out, the exclusion no longer binds you, but the rules do not say gambling accounts reopen by themselves. Regulation 72 allows an application for removal or modification only after expiry, and regulation 71(2) lets you renew or extend the period on Form 1 instead.
The short answer
A self-exclusion in Kenya lasts for the period you selected and no longer. Regulation 71(1) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 says it remains in effect for that duration, so the end date you chose is the date the restriction was built to stop.
What the regulations do not spell out is the procedure at that date. They describe how to enter the Register, how to renew and how to apply for removal, but they say nothing in the text reviewed about automatic reactivation of accounts. The sections below separate what is written from what you should confirm.
What the rules say, in order
| Stage | What the text says | Provision |
|---|---|---|
| Before expiry | No revoking or shortening of the period selected | Form 1, item 9; r.72(1) |
| During the period | No bets, no new accounts, no promotions, no claiming winnings | r.70(7) |
| At expiry | The Register records the date of registration and expiry for each person | r.69(1)(d) |
| After expiry: ask for removal or change | Written application on Form SE-B; the Authority may ask for more information | r.72(1)-(3) |
| Stay excluded | Renew or extend by completing Form 1 again | r.71(2) |
| Permanent exclusion | Review only after a minimum waiting period | r.71(3) |
The row on removal matters most. Regulation 72(1) speaks of an application for removal or modification "only after the expiry of the specified exclusion period", which treats the application as the route back, not the clock alone.
Removal, modification or renewal
You have three choices once the date arrives. You can ask the Authority what your entry's status is, you can apply on Form SE-B to remove or modify the exclusion, or you can apply on Form 1 to renew or extend it. For the full list of lengths and how each is chosen, see the guide on self-exclusion periods from 24 hours to permanent.
The text of Form SE-B is not reproduced in the regulations reviewed, so this guide cannot list what it asks for. Regulation 72(3) says the Authority reviews it and may request additional information before making a determination. Ask the Authority for the current form and for how long a decision takes, since the regulations give no deadline for it.
What the end of a period does not change
Several things stay as they were. Your scope choice on Form 1 (all operators, land-based only, online only, or named operators) applied to the period you served, and nothing in the text carries it over to a new one. A different operator's own pause tool is a separate thing, covered in the guide on how to self-exclude from betting in Kenya.
Your money was dealt with at the start. Section 115(4)(d) of the Act requires the licensee to close the accounts of a person who has self-excluded and return the funds held, which is covered in what happens to your balance when you self-exclude. The Act also requires licensees to remove your details from marketing databases within two days of receiving the completed notification, under section 115(4)(c).
Because accounts were closed, a return to betting would mean opening a new one. Regulation 70(7)(b) bars opening an account while you are in the Register, so that step becomes possible only once the entry no longer applies.
Putting numbers on the decision
Before the date, work out what a return would cost you. The method is the same as in the guide on setting a betting budget and limits: a weekly figure you can afford to lose completely, then a total.
Illustrative example: suppose you set a limit of KES 500 a week and the bookmaker margin on your usual bets is 8%. In a 26-week half year you would stake 26 x 500 = KES 13,000. The expected loss on that stake is 13,000 x 0.08 = KES 1,040, and the real loss can be far larger in a bad run.
The margin is an assumption for the example, not a figure for any operator. Write the weekly number down before the date, and if you cannot name one you are comfortable losing, that is a reason to extend instead.
A short checklist for the final month
- Find the expiry date in the written notice the Authority sends under regulation 70(6), or ask the Authority for it.
- Decide between removal (Form SE-B), renewal (Form 1) or leaving the entry as it is, and note the date you will decide by.
- Set a weekly and monthly figure on paper first, then match any operator limit tools to it; the guide on deposit limit increases and the 24-hour cooling-off explains why raising a limit is slower than lowering one.
- If someone close to you is worried, they have their own route: see the family request to block a betting account.

Questions and answers
Does self-exclusion end automatically in Kenya?
Regulation 71(1) says self-exclusion remains in effect for the duration the applicant selected. The regulations reviewed do not describe what the Authority or licensees do on the expiry date, so confirm the status of your registry entry with the Authority.
Can I end my self-exclusion before the date?
No. Form 1 records that the period selected cannot be revoked or shortened before its expiry, and regulation 72(1) allows removal or modification only after the specified period has expired.
How do I ask for removal after the period ends?
Regulation 72(2) requires a written application on Form SE-B. Under regulation 72(3) the Authority reviews it and may ask for more information before deciding.
Can I extend the exclusion instead?
Yes. Regulation 71(2) allows a person to apply to renew or extend the period by completing Form 1 again under regulation 70(1).
Is a permanent exclusion different?
Yes. Regulation 71(3) says a permanently self-excluded person may not apply for removal for a minimum number of years, after which they may apply for review. The published text of that number is unclear, so this guide gives no figure.
Does the money in my old account come back when the period ends?
Section 115(4)(d) of the Act requires a licensee to close the accounts of a self-excluded person and return the funds held. The funds are therefore dealt with at the start of the exclusion, not held for you until the end.
