How soon does self-exclusion start after you request it?
The text reviewed gives no single start time. Online operators must offer a real-time mechanism (regulation 67(3)); a Form 1 request to the Authority has a seven-day acknowledgement and registry entry clock (regulation 70(3)); an operator must act on a written notice within seven days (Act s.115(5)).
The short answer
There is no single "starts in X hours" rule in the texts reviewed. Instead there are several separate clocks, and which one applies depends on where and how you ask. The steps for making a request are in the guide on how to self-exclude from betting in Kenya; this guide is only about timing.
It reports the published Gambling Control Act, 2025 and the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026. It is not legal advice, and the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) is the body that can tell you how a given request is being handled.
Every clock the sources set
| Step | Time stated | Who acts | Provision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online self-exclusion mechanism | Real-time | Licensee | Regulations, r.67(3) |
| Land-based request in writing | Immediately upon receipt | Licensee | Regulations, r.67(3) |
| Acknowledge a complete Form 1 application | Within seven days of receipt | Authority | Regulations, r.70(3)(a) |
| Enter the applicant in the registry | Within seven days of receipt | Authority | Regulations, r.70(3)(c) |
| Remove contact details from marketing databases | Within two days of receiving the completed notification | Licensee | Act, s.115(4)(c) |
| Implement a written request | Within seven days of receipt (failure is an offence) | Operator | Act, s.115(5) |
| Written notice that status takes effect | No time stated | Authority | Regulations, r.70(6) |
| Refund of deposits made in breach | Within seven days | Licensee | Regulations, r.74(1)(b) |
Note the gap: regulation 70(3) sets a seven-day limit for acknowledging and entering the details, but regulation 70(6), the notice that the status takes effect, carries no time limit in the text.
Route one: the operator's own tool
Regulation 67(3) says a licensee shall provide a real-time self-exclusion mechanism on an online platform. Regulation 87(1) adds that responsible gambling tools must be accessible and real-time, and regulation 87(2)(d) requires an easy to access self-exclusion option for a period of at least twenty-four hours, linked to the national self-exclusion register.
"Real-time" describes how the mechanism must work. The text does not define it in minutes, and it does not say whether the exclusion shows in the national register at the same moment. If it matters to you, ask the operator when your access ends and ask the Authority when the registry entry appears.
Route two: Form 1 to the Authority
A person who wants to enter the registry completes Form 1 under regulation 70(1), states the period and attaches a copy of a national identification card or passport. For a complete application the Authority must acknowledge receipt within seven days, verify the identity and enter the details in the registry within seven days of receipt.
Regulation 70(7) says a person whose name has been entered in the Register shall not place a bet, open a gambling account, receive promotions or marketing material, or claim gambling winnings. The wording ties these limits to the entry, so the registry date is the date to ask about. Regulation 73(3) requires licensees to run daily verification checks against the register, so an operator's view of a new entry may not be instant. The text does not say how long that gap may be in practice.
Two points sit outside the clock. An application must be complete, so a missing identity copy can delay everything. And Form 1 has official-use boxes for approval status, effective date and expiry date, which shows that the effective date is recorded by the Authority, not chosen by the applicant.
Route three: a written notice to an operator
Section 115(1) describes a self-exclusion agreement between the person and a licensee, and section 115(2) requires the person to notify the Authority of it. Section 115(5) then makes it an offence for an operator to fail to implement a request within seven days of receiving a written notification. That is a ceiling on the operator's response, not a promise of a start in seven days; the other rules above can be faster.
Section 115(4) lists the operator's duties. Licensees must establish mechanisms to give effect to the exclusion and refuse service, prevent marketing material as soon as practicable, remove the person from marketing databases within two days, and close customer accounts and return the funds held. The treatment of the funds is covered in the guide on what happens to your balance when you self-exclude.
Turning the waiting days into money terms
A start time that is not immediate leaves some days where betting may still be possible. The arithmetic below shows what those days cost on average, not what they will cost you.
Illustrative example: assume a weekly stake of KES 2,000 and an average bookmaker margin of 8% on those bets. Both numbers are assumptions chosen for the sum, not figures for any operator.
- Stake per day: 2,000 / 7 = about KES 286.
- Expected loss per day: 286 x 0.08 = about KES 23.
- Seven waiting days: 2,000 x 0.08 = KES 160 expected loss.
Expected loss is an average over many bets. In a single week the outcome can be far better or far worse, as the guide on variance and losing streaks shows. The small average cost is not the main point: the days after you ask are the days the request was made for. Once you have asked, stop using betting accounts yourself rather than relying on the gap.
What the sources do not say
- They give no single moment, such as "within 24 hours", at which every route starts.
- They do not say whether a bet placed after a request but before the effective date is treated as a breach. Regulation 74 speaks of a "self-excluded person", and regulation 70(7) speaks of a person "whose name has been entered".
- They do not define "real-time" for the online mechanism.
- They do not give a deadline for the written notice in regulation 70(6).
For these points, keep the date and time of your request, keep any acknowledgement, and ask the Authority in writing. The scope you choose affects who must act, as explained in does self-exclusion cover all betting operators, and the lengths on offer are in self-exclusion periods from 24 hours to permanent.
A calendar example
Illustrative example: you send a complete Form 1 on Monday 5 October. Seven days from receipt is Monday 12 October, so on the text reviewed the Authority must acknowledge the application and enter your details by then, if it received the form that same day. The two-day marketing rule counts from the operator receiving the completed notification, so if that is also 5 October the deadline is Wednesday 7 October. The dates that apply to you depend on when each body actually received your request.
If you need support now
Do not wait for a start date before asking for help. The responsible gambling page lists the GRA toll-free line and where to turn. Gambling is addictive; play responsibly, and only if you are 18 or over.
Questions and answers
Is self-exclusion instant in Kenya?
For online platforms, regulation 67(3) requires a real-time self-exclusion mechanism, and for land-based premises it requires action immediately on receipt of the written request. A Form 1 application to the Authority is handled on a seven-day clock under regulation 70(3).
What is the longest an operator may take to act on a written request?
Section 115(5) of the Act makes it an offence for an operator to fail to implement a self-exclusion request within seven days of receiving a written notification. The fine is up to one million shillings or imprisonment of up to one year, or both.
How will I know the date my exclusion began?
Regulation 70(6) says the Authority notifies the applicant in writing once the self-exclusion status takes effect. Form 1 also has an official-use box for the effective date and the expiry date.
How soon do the marketing messages stop?
Section 115(4)(c) requires a licensee to remove the name and contact details of a self-excluded person from its marketing databases within two days of receiving the completed self-exclusion notification. Section 115(4)(b) adds a duty to prevent marketing material reaching the person as soon as practicable.
Does the 24-hour tool start at once?
Regulation 87(2)(d) sets a minimum length of at least twenty-four hours for the operator option and regulation 87(1) requires the tools to be accessible and real-time. The text does not give a separate start delay for that tool.
What if I place a bet after I asked but before the exclusion starts?
The sources reviewed do not say how that gap is treated. Regulation 74 covers a person who is already self-excluded, so keep records of when you submitted your request and ask the operator and the Authority how your case is handled.
