Deposit limits and the 24-hour wait before an increase
The regulations seen for this guide require deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis (regulation 87(2)(a)) but do not set a waiting period before a limit is raised. The only twenty-four hour figure in regulation 87 is for self-exclusion. A wait before an increase is therefore a platform feature or a personal rule.
What the rules say, and what they leave out
Regulation 87(1) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 requires a licensee to give players accessible and real-time tools to control their gambling. Regulation 87(2)(a) names the first of them: a facility for setting deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
The same regulation does not say how long a limit must stay in place, or whether an increase must wait. Searching the regulations and the Act held for this site found no cooling-off period for raising a deposit limit. For the wider picture of setting limits, see the guide on setting a betting budget and limits.
Where the 24 hours comes from
The number is real, but it belongs to something else. Regulation 87(2)(d) requires an easy to access option for self-exclusion for a period of at least twenty-four hours. That is a floor on how short an operator's break tool may be.
It is easy to mix the two up, so the table separates them.
| Item | Stated in the regulations? | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis | Yes, a facility must exist | Regulation 87(2)(a) |
| Loss, session and expenditure limits | Yes, a facility must exist | Regulation 87(2)(b) |
| Self-exclusion option of at least twenty-four hours | Yes | Regulation 87(2)(d) |
| A waiting period before a deposit limit is raised | Not found in the texts read | None |
| How fast a lowered limit takes effect | Not found in the texts read | None |
The two "not found" rows mean the answer depends on the platform. It may apply a delay, or none, and its help pages are the only place that can say which.
Why a wait works as a safeguard
A limit is a decision made in advance, so that it does not have to be made again under pressure. Raising it in the middle of a session reverses that decision at the worst moment. A wait separates the request from the urge.
The arithmetic below shows what an increase costs on average. It uses an assumed margin, because the real figure differs by market and bookmaker.
Illustrative example
Assume a monthly deposit limit of KES 3,000, an increase to KES 4,500, and an average bookmaker margin of 5% on every shilling staked. Suppose all deposited money is staked once.
Expected cost at the old limit: 3,000 × 0.05 = KES 150. Expected cost at the new limit: 4,500 × 0.05 = KES 225. The increase is 1,500 ÷ 3,000 = 50% more deposit, and the expected cost rises by 225 − 150 = KES 75, which is also 50% more.
In practice money is often staked more than once, which raises the total staked and the expected cost further. The method is explained in the guide on the expected value of a bet.
How to build your own 24-hour wait
If the platform has no delay, create one. The steps are short, and each one turns a mood into a number.
- Write the request down. Note the new figure and the reason, with the date and time.
- Wait a full day. Do not deposit, and do not change the limit, until the next day.
- Test it against spare money. Recalculate the month: income minus essentials and savings. If the new limit is above what is left, the answer is no.
- Raise only the limit you need. A weekly limit that stays at the old figure still caps the month, even if the monthly one is higher.
- Keep the break if the reason is a loss. A wish to raise a limit to win money back is a signal to stop, not a reason for more room.
Reading the platform's own settings
Before relying on any delay, find three facts in the platform's help pages. First, whether a request to raise a limit takes effect at once or after a stated time. Second, whether a request to lower a limit takes effect at once. Third, whether a pending increase can be cancelled before it applies.
Write the answers next to your budget. If the help pages are silent, treat the limit as changeable at any moment, and rely on your own written wait instead.
Pairing a wait with a break
A limit raised after a loss is the situation a longer break is for. The twenty-four hour option in regulation 87(2)(d) can be used as the wait itself: switch the account off for a day, then decide. Self-exclusion that lasts months is a separate, formal process, set out in the guide on how to self-exclude from betting in Kenya.
Whatever limit you choose, the online minimum stake in section 71(1) of the Act is twenty shillings per bet, and the entry on the minimum online stake shows how that floor interacts with a small budget. Gambling is addictive, and play responsibly or not at all.
Signs that the limit is not the problem
If limits have been raised more than once in a month, or raised and then used up within days, the arithmetic is no longer the issue. The regulator's toll-free line is 0800-723-770, and the guide on self-exclusion lists the options that follow.
Questions and answers
Does Kenyan law require a 24-hour wait before a deposit limit goes up?
Not in the texts read for this guide. Regulation 87(2)(a) requires a facility for deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, and says nothing about delays on increases. If a platform applies a wait, it is that platform's own design.
What is the twenty-four hour figure in regulation 87?
Regulation 87(2)(d) requires an easy to access option for self-exclusion for a period of at least twenty-four hours. It is a minimum length of a break, not a delay on raising limits.
Can a limit be lowered straight away?
The regulations do not say how quickly any change takes effect. Check the platform's own help pages or ask its customer care centre before relying on a change being instant.
Why would a wait before an increase help?
A decision to raise a limit is often made right after a loss or a win, when the wish to continue is strongest. A delay separates the decision from that moment, and the figure is then judged against the budget instead of the mood.
Is a higher deposit limit a sign of a bigger budget?
Only if the monthly budget has genuinely grown from spare money. A limit raised mid-month to keep playing is a budget being moved, and the average cost of betting applies to every extra shilling.
Where can I get help if I keep raising my limits?
Section 115 of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 provides for self-exclusion, and the regulator's toll-free line is 0800-723-770.
