The arithmetic behind a bet, shown step by step
BetSmart Kenya explains what betting odds mean in numbers (probability, margin, expected value and budget) so that an adult in Kenya can read a price and know what it costs.
- decimal odds
- 2.50
- implied probability = 1 ÷ 2.50
- 40.0%
- two-way market 1.90 / 1.90
- 105.26%
- margin = 105.26% − 100%
- 5.26%
For adults only. Gambling is addictive, and the long-run arithmetic on these pages favours the bookmaker, not the player. Nothing here is a tip or a method for profit. If you want to cut down or stop, start with the responsible gambling page; the regulator's toll-free line is 0800-723-770.

Read the formula
Every guide states the formula first, then names each term. Legal points quote the Gambling Control Act, 2025 or its regulations by section.
Follow one worked case
Each formula comes with an "Illustrative example" in shillings. The figures are made up to show the method; they are not market prices.
Try your own numbers
Three calculators repeat the same sums in your browser. They store nothing, send nothing and cannot forecast any outcome.

Questions and answers
Can a calculator on this site tell me which bet will win?
No. The calculators only rearrange numbers you type in: they convert odds, add up implied probabilities and divide a budget. None of them knows anything about a match, a team or a draw, and none can predict a result.
What is the smallest online bet allowed in Kenya?
Section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 says a player in an online gambling activity shall not bet an amount of less than twenty shillings in a competition. The duty to enforce it sits with the operator under section 71(3).
Does BetSmart Kenya recommend betting companies?
No. The site carries no rankings, no ratings, no bonus offers and no links to operators. To check whether a company holds a licence, use the register published by the Gambling Regulatory Authority at gra.go.ke.
What does implied probability mean?
It is the probability that a price corresponds to. For decimal odds it is 1 divided by the odds, so odds of 2.50 correspond to 40%. Because prices include the bookmaker's margin, the implied probabilities of all outcomes of one event add up to more than 100%.
Where do I turn if betting is getting out of control?
The Gambling Regulatory Authority runs a toll-free line, 0800-723-770, and a self-exclusion process under section 115 of the Gambling Control Act, 2025. The responsible gambling page on this site sets out the steps.
This page is information and arithmetic only, not betting, financial or legal advice, and no operator pays to appear on this site. For adults aged 18+ only: gambling is addictive, and no calculation can predict a result. How the pages are written and checked is set out in the editorial policy.
