Deposit, loss and stake limits: what is the difference?

A deposit limit caps the money you pay into the account, a loss limit caps what you lose net of returns, and a stake limit caps the amount wagered. They count different things, so the same week of betting can hit one and never touch another. Regulation 87(2) names deposit, loss, session and expenditure limits.

Three limits, three different counters

Each limit watches one running total. A deposit limit watches money paid into the account, a loss limit watches losses, and a stake limit watches the amount wagered. Because the totals differ, the limits do not move together.

Regulation 87(2) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 requires licensees to offer a facility for deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, and a facility for setting loss, session and expenditure limits. The regulation does not define these terms, so the meanings below are the plain arithmetic of what each one can count. Platforms may label and calculate them differently.

LimitWhat it countsWhat it does not stop
Deposit limitMoney paid into the account in the periodStaking returns again, so total stakes can exceed it
Loss limitStakes lost minus returns receivedLarge stakes while results are even
Stake (expenditure) limitTotal amount wagered, or the size of one betNothing about whether the money wagered is lost

A session limit, also named in regulation 87(2)(b), counts time instead of money. This guide leaves it aside. For how to choose the figures themselves, see the guide on setting a betting budget and limits.

One week, followed step by step

Illustrative example

Assume a weekly deposit limit of KES 1,000, a weekly loss limit of KES 500 and a weekly stake limit of KES 1,500. Every bet is KES 250 at decimal odds of 2.00, so a win returns 250 × 2.00 = KES 500 in total (the stake included). The balance starts at zero and KES 1,000 is deposited.

The table follows six bets in a row. Net loss is total staked minus total returned.

BetResultBalance afterTotal stakedNet loss
1LostKES 750KES 250KES 250
2LostKES 500KES 500KES 500
3WonKES 750KES 750KES 250
4WonKES 1,000KES 1,000KES 0
5WonKES 1,250KES 1,250KES 0 (a net gain of KES 250)
6LostKES 1,000KES 1,500KES 0

Bet 3 shows the arithmetic: the balance of KES 500 falls to 250 when the stake is taken, then rises to 750 when the KES 500 return arrives. The net loss after bet 3 is 750 staked minus 500 returned, which is KES 250.

Which limit stopped the week

Read the same table against each limit. The loss limit of KES 500 was reached exactly after bet 2, when net loss hit KES 500. If it blocks further bets there, the week ends with the account at KES 500 and the later wins never happen.

If the loss limit had been absent, the deposit limit of KES 1,000 was never touched again after the first payment, because no new money was paid in. Yet total staked reached KES 1,500 by bet 6, which is exactly the stake limit. So the deposit limit counted KES 1,000, the stake limit counted KES 1,500, and the loss limit counted a net loss that peaked at KES 500. Three counters, one week.

What each limit is good for

  1. Deposit limit: caps the cash leaving your wallet or mobile money. It is the simplest guard against topping up in a bad moment.
  2. Loss limit: caps the damage directly, whatever the stakes or the number of bets. It is the closest to the question "how much can this week cost me?"
  3. Stake limit: caps how much is exposed to the bookmaker's margin. Expected cost grows with the amount wagered, so a lower total slows the average loss.

Illustrative example

Assume an average margin of 5% on every shilling staked, which is a made-up figure for the sum. Staking KES 1,500 costs on average 1,500 × 0.05 = KES 75. Staking KES 1,000 costs on average 1,000 × 0.05 = KES 50. The method is explained in the guide on the expected value of a bet.

Gaps each limit leaves

A deposit limit alone is weak against staking returns repeatedly. A series of small wins can keep the balance alive, and total stakes climb well past the deposit figure as in the table above. A loss limit alone does not control how much is wagered while results are level, and a stake limit alone does not say how much may be lost.

Setting two limits, a deposit limit and a loss limit, closes the largest gaps for most budgets. Choose the figures from spare money, not from what a platform offers by default.

Raising and lowering limits

A limit is only useful if it is hard to undo in the moment. The regulations read for this site do not set a waiting period before a limit is raised, a point covered in the guide on the wait before a deposit limit increase. A written rule of your own, such as no change until the next day, does the same job.

The floor under every stake limit

Online, section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 sets a minimum of twenty shillings for a bet in a competition. A stake limit expressed per bet therefore cannot usefully sit below KES 20. The entry on the minimum online stake shows how that floor interacts with a small budget.

When limits are not enough

If limits are being raised, bypassed or ignored, the arithmetic is no longer the problem. Section 115 of the Act provides for self-exclusion, and the regulator's toll-free line is 0800-723-770. Questions and answers

Which limit is the strictest?

None is strictest in general, because each counts something different. A deposit limit caps cash in, a loss limit caps net loss and a stake limit caps money wagered. The one that stops you first depends on how often the money is staked again.

Does a deposit limit stop me staking more than the deposit?

No. Returns from winning bets go back into the balance and can be staked again without a new deposit. A deposit limit only counts money paid in, so total stakes can be well above it.

Does Kenyan law use the words stake limit?

Regulation 87(2)(b) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 lists loss, session and expenditure limits, and regulation 87(2)(a) lists deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. The regulation does not define these terms, so how a platform labels and counts them is shown in its own help pages.

Can a stake limit be set lower than KES 20?

For an online bet, no useful one. Section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 says a player shall not bet less than twenty shillings in a competition, so a cap per bet below that figure would leave no bet that is allowed.

Do I need all three limits?

Not necessarily. One well chosen limit can hold a budget, but each one closes a gap the others leave open. Which of them a platform offers is described in its own settings.

Where can I get help if limits are not holding?

Self-exclusion is provided for in section 115 of the Gambling Control Act, 2025, and the regulator's toll-free line is 0800-723-770.
