Heinz, Super Heinz and Goliath bets: how many bets and what stake?

A Heinz is 57 bets on 6 selections, a Super Heinz is 120 bets on 7 and a Goliath is 247 bets on 8. None includes singles. Total stake = unit stake x number of bets, so a KES 20 unit costs KES 1,140, KES 2,400 and KES 4,940.

What the three bets are

A Heinz, a Super Heinz and a Goliath are full-cover bets without singles. A Heinz uses 6 selections, a Super Heinz uses 7 and a Goliath uses 8, and the slip is split into every double, treble and larger combination of them. They are the larger relatives of the Trixie and Yankee, which follow the same counting with 3 and 4 selections.

Each combination is a separate bet whose odds are the product of its legs. Names can differ between operators, so count the lines listed on the slip rather than trusting the label.

How the bets are counted

One combination of k selections out of n is one bet. The number of different groups of k that can be drawn from n selections is written C(n, k). Because there are no singles, the total is the sum of C(n, k) for every k from 2 up to n.

C(n, k) = n! ÷ (k! × (n − k)!) number of bets = C(n, 2) + C(n, 3) + ... + C(n, n) total stake = unit stake × number of bets

For six selections: C(6, 2) = 720 ÷ (2 × 24) = 15, C(6, 3) = 720 ÷ (6 × 6) = 20, C(6, 4) = 15, C(6, 5) = 6 and C(6, 6) = 1. So 15 + 20 + 15 + 6 + 1 = 57 bets, which is a Heinz.

For seven selections: C(7, 2) = 21, C(7, 3) = 35, C(7, 4) = 35, C(7, 5) = 21, C(7, 6) = 7 and C(7, 7) = 1. So 21 + 35 + 35 + 21 + 7 + 1 = 120 bets, which is a Super Heinz.

For eight selections: C(8, 2) = 28, C(8, 3) = 56, C(8, 4) = 70, C(8, 5) = 56, C(8, 6) = 28, C(8, 7) = 8 and C(8, 8) = 1. So 28 + 56 + 70 + 56 + 28 + 8 + 1 = 247 bets, which is a Goliath.

A shortcut to check the count

Each selection is either in a given bet or left out, which gives 2 × 2 × ... × 2 = 2^n choices for n selections. Remove the empty choice (1) and the n single-selection choices, and what remains is the number of bets.

For six selections: 2^6 − 1 − 6 = 64 − 7 = 57. For seven: 128 − 1 − 7 = 120. For eight: 256 − 1 − 8 = 247. Each result matches the sum above. The count roughly doubles with each extra selection, so the total stake does too.

Finding the total stake

The stake you enter is the unit stake, and it is placed on every bet. The slip then shows a much larger total, and that total is the amount that leaves your balance.

Unit stakeHeinz (57 bets)Super Heinz (120 bets)Goliath (247 bets)
KES 20KES 1,140KES 2,400KES 4,940
KES 50KES 2,850KES 6,000KES 12,350
KES 100KES 5,700KES 12,000KES 24,700

To work backwards, divide your ceiling by the number of bets. A ceiling of KES 5,000 allows at most 5,000 ÷ 57 = KES 87.72 on a Heinz, which is KES 87 in whole shillings. On a Super Heinz it is 5,000 ÷ 120 = KES 41.67, so KES 41, and on a Goliath it is 5,000 ÷ 247 = KES 20.24, so KES 20.

Illustrative example: a Heinz

Illustrative example

Six invented selections, each at decimal odds of 2.00, with a unit stake of KES 20. Total stake = 20 × 57 = KES 1,140. Equal odds keep the arithmetic short; real selections rarely share one price.

Every double pays at 2 × 2 = 4.00, every treble at 8.00, and so on. Multiply the number of bets in each group by its odds:

GroupWorkingSum of odds
15 doubles15 × 4.0060
20 trebles20 × 8.00160
15 fourfolds15 × 16.00240
6 fivefolds6 × 32.00192
1 sixfold1 × 64.0064
All 57 bets60 + 160 + 240 + 192 + 64716

All six winning returns 20 × 716 = KES 14,320, a result of 14,320 − 1,140 = +KES 13,180. A check: add 1 to each odds figure to get 3, and 3^6 = 729. Take away 1 for the empty choice and 6 × 2 = 12 for the singles, and 729 − 1 − 12 = 716, the same sum.

What each number of winners returns

Only bets with no losing leg pay, so the return depends on how many selections win. With k winners out of six, the bets still alive are the combinations of those k winners. In this example the sum of odds for k winners is 3^k − 1 − 2k.

WinnersBets that winSum of oddsTotal returnResult after KES 1,140

3420KES 400−KES 740
214KES 80−KES 1,060
1 or 0none0KES 0−KES 1,140

The five-winner row is 3^5 − 1 − 10 = 243 − 11 = 232, and 20 × 232 = KES 4,640. The three-winner row is 27 − 1 − 6 = 20, which is 3 doubles at 4.00 plus 1 treble at 8.00. Notice that a Heinz with half of its selections winning still loses money here.

How the same idea scales up

With the same equal odds of 2.00 and a unit stake of KES 20, seven winners in a Super Heinz give a sum of odds of 3^7 − 1 − 14 = 2,187 − 15 = 2,172, so a return of 20 × 2,172 = KES 43,440 against a stake of KES 2,400. Eight winners in a Goliath give 3^8 − 1 − 16 = 6,561 − 17 = 6,544, a return of 20 × 6,544 = KES 130,880 against KES 4,940.

These top returns need every selection to win together. The chance of that is the product of the individual probabilities, which falls fast as selections are added, as the guide on the accumulator odds and payout workings shows for a single fold.

What more lines do to the margin

Every price carries the bookmaker's margin, and each line multiplies several prices together. The margin therefore compounds in every line, as why accumulators carry more margin explains. The average result of the whole slip is the sum of the average results of its lines, so 57, 120 or 247 lines that each cost money on average still cost money in total.

The Heinz family also adds nothing that a smaller slip lacks except size. Two winners out of six, a common outcome, leaves a loss in the example above.

The KES 20 floor and combination bets

Section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 says a player in an online gambling activity shall not bet an amount of less than twenty shillings in a competition. The minimum online stake entry sets the section out. The Act does not say whether each line of a Heinz is a separate bet for this purpose, so this guide states no rule where the Act is silent. The operator's displayed terms say what unit stake is accepted.

Questions and answers

How many bets are in a Heinz?

Fifty-seven. With six selections there are 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 fivefolds and 1 sixfold, and 15 + 20 + 15 + 6 + 1 = 57. A Heinz has no single bets.

How many bets are in a Super Heinz?

One hundred and twenty. With seven selections the counts are 21, 35, 35, 21, 7 and 1 for doubles up to a sevenfold, and they add to 120.

How many bets are in a Goliath?

Two hundred and forty-seven. With eight selections the counts are 28, 56, 70, 56, 28, 8 and 1 for doubles up to an eightfold, and they add to 247.

Is there a quick way to check the number of bets?

Yes. Take 2 to the power of n, then subtract 1 for the empty choice and n for the single bets. For six selections that is 64 - 1 - 6 = 57, for seven it is 128 - 1 - 7 = 120 and for eight it is 256 - 1 - 8 = 247.

How many selections must win for a Heinz to return anything?

At least two, because the smallest bet in a Heinz is a double. If only one selection wins, every line contains a loser and the return is zero.

Does the KES 20 online minimum apply to each line of a Heinz?

Section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 says a player in an online gambling activity shall not bet an amount of less than twenty shillings in a competition. The section does not say how the lines of a combination bet are counted, so check the operator's displayed terms for the minimum unit stake.
