What is a bet slip? Reading stake, odds and potential return

A bet slip is the list of selections, odds and stake you assemble before a bet is accepted. It shows the total odds and the potential return, which is the stake multiplied by the decimal odds. Until you confirm it, nothing has been staked.

Definition

A bet slip is the working screen or paper form on which a bet is built. Each selection you add appears as a line with its odds. You then enter a stake, and the slip shows the potential return. The bet exists only once you confirm it.

potential return = stake × total decimal odds

Profit is the potential return minus the stake. The two are often confused, so read the label on the line before relying on the figure.

Illustrative example

A single selection at decimal odds of 2.50 with a stake of KES 200 gives a potential return of 200 × 2.50 = KES 500. The profit if it succeeds is 500 − 200 = KES 300. If it fails, the loss is the whole KES 200.

For a slip with two selections combined, the odds multiply. Odds of 1.80 and 2.10 give total odds of 1.80 × 2.10 = 3.78, so a KES 100 stake shows a potential return of 100 × 3.78 = KES 378. Both selections must succeed for that return, as explained in the guide on calculating accumulator odds and payout.

What to check before confirming

Check that the odds are in the format you expect; the guide on decimal and fractional odds shows how they differ. Check that the stake is the amount you meant, and that it fits the limits you set in your betting budget.

Regulation 23(1) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 requires a licensee to clearly display betting odds, rules and terms applicable to each bet. Regulation 23(2) bars the licensee from altering the terms of a bet after it has been accepted, except as permitted by law or approved rules.

Questions and answers

Is the potential return on a slip the same as profit?

No. Potential return includes your stake. Profit is the return minus the stake, so a slip showing KES 500 return on a KES 200 stake means a profit of KES 300 if it succeeds.

Can the terms of a bet change after I confirm the slip?

Regulation 23(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 says a licensee shall not alter the terms of a bet after it has been accepted, except as permitted by law or approved rules.
